The Right Path
You are ready to pursue a higher education in the field of nursing, and whether you seek a BSN or MSN, many questions remain. Will you choose a traditional college campus, or an online degree program? What will your specialty be? How will you choose the program that meets all of your needs?
Online Versus Campus
There are pros and cons to all education programs, whether they are online on in a campus setting. You will need to determine which program best suits your learning style, your schedule and your overall lifestyle. Online programs offer flexibility and convenience: self-paced learning, flexible class times and in many cases, lower tuition costs. On-campus learning offers hands-on learning, easy access to classmates and professors and a more structured learning environment.
Compare Programs
The best way to choose a nursing degree program is to look at several different programs. Select at least two online options and two campus options and look at how they line up financially, with accreditation and coursework, program length, financial aid options, and career services. List the top three elements that are most important to you, for example, cost, program length, and job placement services, and use that to help you narrow down your choices.
Choose a Specialty
As you delve deeper into the process, consider the different specialties that interest you, and what schools offer the program that meets your requirements. Some programs may focus only on one element like training nurse to become educators, and if you want to teach, may be a better choice than a program that offers many different specialties for nursing degrees.
Learn Your State Requirements
It is vitally important that the nursing program you choose meets the state requirements for nursing, including clinical experience hours, licensure and approved coursework. These are especially important to discover when seeking an online nursing degree.
