Distance Learning

With the advent of online degree programs, education has become even more accessible for today's students. Online programs offer flexibility, lower cost and convenience, and allow students to learn in a different learning environment. And a high percentage of online degree programs are accredited and equal in quality to traditional campus programs.

For nurses earning their degree online, the convenience is attractive: flexible classes, no commute and the freedom of self-paced learning. The world of online nursing programs has its own set of conditions, so below are a few tips to help you navigate.

  1. Thoroughly research your potential program to see if it's accredited, and meets your individual educational needs. This includes any state nursing requirements.
  2. Be sure to take time to establish contact with your professors and to log into your class as often as required.
  3. Be willing to communicate frequently; and especially interacting with fellow cohorts and contacting your professor with questions and concerns.
  4. Stay organized. Between a busy shift, family, friends and getting rest, be sure to keep a calendar that includes deadlines from the syllabus, coursework requirements and test dates.
  5. Be diligent, and ask family or friends for help in staying on-track. Remember that online learning requires you to structure your own study time, class time and discussion.

Earning a nursing degree can be a daunting task, and online programs can make the entire process more comfortable for the student. However, there are advantages to on-campus learning, so be sure to research all of your nursing degree options.
